Introduction

The College of Engineering aims at training high-tech talents in high-tech smart manufacturing and precision mechanical engineering, electromechanical system and integration engineering, materials and green energy engineering, semiconductor processing, aeronautical engineering and maintenance, avionics, unmanned aerial vehicle technology, and advanced vehicle technology. Also, to achieve the educational goals of a national school, the college combines Industry 4.0 and AI engineering in its development toward an industrial and academic university of technology. In the academic year of 2018, the college established a five-year program in precision mechanical engineering and a BA program in aviation maintenance (open to students of the university). The college aims to bring its remarkable educational tradition and research performance as well as energy into full play, attach great importance to the students’ practical competence, combine the special features in the technological development of Taiwanese industries, promote industry-academia collaboration, and encourage industrial transformation as well as upgrading. In the academic year of 2020, the college established the PhD program in smart industry technology research and design (open to students outside the university). At present, the College of Engineering has one five-year program, seven departments, one BA program, seven MA programs, two in-service MA programs, two PhD programs, 126 full-time teachers, and 4,846 students.

Attaching equal importance to both engineering technology and cultivation of humanistic values, the College of Engineering is a remarkable college that possesses the following features:

  1. Cultivate engineering talents equipped with both theoretical and practical skills as well as humanistic values.
  2. Emphasize the importance of the students’ foreign language skills and cultivate talents equipped with a global vision and professional skills.
  3. Strengthen academia-industry collaboration and cultivate the students’ ability to cope with practical engineering issues.
  4. Develop the students’ capability of adjusting themselves according to the industry dynamic and lifelong learning.
  5. Foster the students’ global mobility and capability of interdisciplinary research.
  6. Cultivate the students’ moral values concerning engineering ethics and sense of responsibility.
  7. Develop the students’ capability of communication, coordination, and teamwork.

In the future, the college will cooperate with the government in the technological development of optomechatronics, green energy, and micro/nano manufacturing. Precision machinery, automation, and micro-electro-mechanical systems have been regarded as important developmental goals to be promoted by the National Science Council, the Ministry of Education, government research institutes, and industries. In order to strengthen the technological research and development, the government has established science parks in Hsinchu, Taichung, and Tainan, with the intention of achieving efficient and systematic integration as well as promoting industrial advancement. To act in accordance with the government policies and in order to strengthen Taiwan’s development in areas such as mechanics, electromechanics, materials technology, energy science and technology, civil aviation technology, precision components, and critical component technology, the college has long endeavored to enhance the technological research, development, and application in these areas. Having already built a solid foundation, the college will continue to enhance itself to fulfill its responsibilities in cultivating Taiwanese talents, research, and development.
